High heat is convenient and fast, but it is one of the most destructive forces in your laundry routine. Many fabrics simply cannot withstand the intense heat of a dryer, leading to shrinkage, warping, and permanent damage.
Natural fibers shrink in high heat. Cotton, wool, and linen are particularly vulnerable to heat shrinkage. Once these fibers shrink, there is no way to reverse the damage. That expensive cotton shirt or wool sweater can become unwearable after just one high-heat drying cycle.
Synthetic fibers can melt or warp. Polyester, nylon, spandex, and acrylic are plastics that soften and deform under high heat. This causes fabrics to lose their shape, develop shiny spots, or even melt into wrinkled, hardened textures. Elastic waistbands and stretchy fabrics are especially prone to heat damage.
Energy waste is another downside. High heat settings consume significantly more electricity than medium or low settings. Running your dryer on high heat for every load is costing you money on your utility bills without providing any real benefit for most fabrics.
The best drying practices involve matching heat to fabric type. Delicates, synthetics, and dark colors should be dried on low heat or air dried. Towels and jeans can handle medium heat. Whites and heavy cotton items are the only ones that truly benefit from high heat.
Air drying is the safest option for preserving your clothes. Line drying or using a drying rack extends the life of fabrics significantly. If you must use a dryer, use the lowest heat setting possible and remove clothes while they are still slightly damp to reduce heat exposure.
